In the Catholic Mass, we are immersed in scripture from beginning to end. We hear the Word of God proclaimed in four segments (three in daily Mass): something from the Old Testament, the Psalms, the letters of the New Testament, and the Gospel. We also hear the bible quoted in the prayers of Mass; scripture is the fabric that weaves together the entire liturgy, sewing for us a cloak to wear as we go back out into the world. We are more familiar with God’s Word better than we might realize!
Did you know that there’s an entire museum in Washington DC that’s dedicated to the Bible? It answers the question: Why has the Bible had such a profound influence on humankind throughout the centuries?
You can visit the Museum of the Bible through the excellent Virtual Reality experience included below.
As I watched this video, I found myself asking the question: If the bible is so influential, why are so many bible-believers today being influenced by non-Christian ideas?
How to use this video to teach
By using this video in your catechism class, youth group, or adult bible study group, you can inspire deeper thought about how the Bible has affected our culture and what some non-Christian influences in our society have been doing to undermine biblical values.
Suggested discussion or homework questions:
1. What evidence do you see today that the bible has influenced our culture?
2. Do you think that the bible has become out-dated? Why or why not?
3. Since the bible is the Word of God, do you think God is more powerful than all the non-Christian influences that contradict its teachings? If he is, then why do you suppose our culture is becoming less and less Christian? Is there anything we can do about this?
